"Thinking your way out of a mental rut is like trying to sniff your way out of a cocaine addiction."
- unknown
I hope that quote put a smile on your face Reader because when I first heard it, it got me. It landed with me because in typical masculine 'problem solver' fashion, I've been forever trying to 'think' my way out of my problems. And really, it's just dumb. You become absent, overwhelmed and probably end up deeper in the rut. This is where a Mental Reset System comes in - an essential part of high performance and a system I've used myself and many times with my CEO clients. Not just because it's extremely practical advice but it also serves as a foundation to your success as a high-performer. Now before we dive into how you can reset your mind, sharpen your focus, and increase your productivity we'll address some of the common limiting beliefs. Common Limiting Beliefs: The Association of Mental Wellbeing & Success Many people still see that prioritising mental health is a waste of time when they could be 'doing more' to make money or get results elsewhere. They fear that taking breaks or focusing on mindset means losing precious hours that could be spent working. But here’s the truth: those who perform at their peak and earn more have mastered mental fitness [or are constantly practising improved mental fitness]. In fact, a study from the University of San Francisco by Michael A. Freeman has shown a significant connection between entrepreneurs’ mental health and their business success. Entrepreneurs with strong mental health are better equipped to manage stress, make effective decisions, and stay resilient in the face of challenges, which directly influence their business outcomes. ...a lack of Time AKA: I'm not prioritising the time... ...a fear of sacrificing productivity There’s a common misconception that slowing down for a mental reset will result in a loss of productivity but all hours working are not equal. I know that when I'm in a 'good headspace', when I've exercised or done something positive for my mental wellbeing, I get way more done in a shorter time. ...a need for perfectionism and control This mindset can make it hard to delegate, switch off from work, or trust others with tasks, leading to burnout rather than investing in a mental reset. Let go of the need to control everything and focus on your INPUTS rather than the outcomes. ...an overload of information In today’s digital age, there is an overwhelming amount of information on mental health and performance strategies. A lot of strategies work, you just have the option to choose...don't get caught up on which is the best strategy, just choose 1 and go. ...a resistance to change Change is not scary if you know what to do and how to do it. Implementing a mental reset often requires changing routines, attitudes, or habits that are deeply ingrained. Change itself isn't hard, but being consistent with new habits, is. By recognizing these limiting factors, you can start addressing them and gradually introduce the necessary steps for a sustainable and impactful Mental Reset System. THE MENTAL RESET SYSTEM. SECTION 1: REVIVE YOURSELF. Step 1: Acknowledge & Reframe The first step to a mental reset is acknowledging where you are right now. Take a few minutes today to identify mental blocks that could be holding you back—stress, self-doubt, or burnout. Then, reframe your mindset by focusing on growth and progress instead of obstacles. Limiting beliefs like “I can’t take a break” or “Success only comes from grinding 24/7” are counterproductive. Step 2: Brain Dump Technique If you’re feeling overwhelmed, clear your mind with a brain dump. Grab a piece of paper and write down everything that’s cluttering your thoughts, from to-do lists to concerns. This simple exercise will help free up mental space, so you can prioritise tasks and focus on what really matters. Step 3: Implement Structured Downtime Schedule deliberate mental breaks. The most productive entrepreneurs know that recovery is just as important as effort. Research shows that taking short breaks throughout the day can boost performance by 20%. Tip: Try using the Pomodoro Technique—work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. SECTION 2: Make It Habitual. Practical DAILY Tips for Better Mental Fitness 1. Practice Mindfulness Start your mornings with 5 minutes of meditation or deep breathing to reduce stress and set a focused tone for the day. 2. Limit Distractions Turn off notifications for social media or emails when working on critical tasks. Constant distractions can reduce your productivity by up to 40%. 3. Set Clear Boundaries Protect your mental energy by setting boundaries between work and personal time. It’s been found that entrepreneurs working excessive hours are 50% more likely to experience mental health issues. SECTION 3: STEP INTO THE 1%. Strategies for High-Level Performance 1. Sleep for Mental Recovery Quality sleep is the cornerstone of high performance. Business leaders who sleep 7-8 hours a night report higher focus and decision-making abilities. Poor sleep leads to a 30% reduction in cognitive performance. 2. Move Daily Physical activity is directly tied to mental clarity. A simple 30-minute walk can improve brain function and elevate your mood. 3. Optimize Your Environment Create a distraction-free workspace that promotes focus. Even small changes, like decluttering your desk, can boost productivity by 15%.
